Year 10 Cambodia Trip

Queenwood has supported a Teaching Training Program in Cambodia for over a decade. Our teachers train Cambodian student teachers and the annual Year 10 trip offers cultural immersion for our students. A series of lectures prepares students for their program of activities as they engage with the culture, history and service projects that they describe as ‘life-changing’.

In December 2017, a group of Year 10 girls immersed themselves in Cambodia’s rich and varied history. They were sobered by their visits to the Killing Fields and S21 prison, but found light in the richly decorated 12th Century temples of Angkor Wat. The girls took special pleasure in spending the day teaching primary school students the lessons they had practised in the Queenwood Junior School. When they returned to school, they delighted their peers with stories of Mr Daunt Watney’s Elvis impressions and drew small gasps as they described sampling tarantulas for tea, but what will remain with them most is their newfound understanding of the impact of the Khmer Rouge on the Cambodian people.
