Homework and Study

Homework at Queenwood is given for a purpose. It gives the girls a chance to consolidate what they have been taught at school and it develops productive long term habits of learning and planning.

One of the most difficult things about homework that all students face is starting it. This is more apparent when there is a major assignment or project set. Girls are encouraged to plan their time so that they can spread their workload evenly rather than panic at the last minute. The Queenwood Diary can be a great help if students record all homework on the day that it is due, use reminders of progress that should be made and check through their diary daily so they know what to prioritise.

Students in K-2 are set homework suitable for their age and level of development. Reading is the most important homework for these students. Year 3 students should expect 30 minutes of homework. Year 4 students should expect 45 minutes of homework and Years 5-6 receive up to an hour of homework per night.

Senior School students should review the day's work each night and complete at least one hour of homework assigned, including making progress on work due at a later date.

Homework each night should occupy the following amount of time:

Year 7 and 8: 1 hour
Year 9 and 10: 1-2 hours
Year 11: 3 hours
Year 12: 3-4 hours, longer on weekends

Each subject provides reading lists of extension material. Girls may choose as they wish to fill homework time to the expected limit.

Students in Senior school can take advantage of extra tutorials in Mathematics held from 7.30am each day of the week except Monday. These tutorials are open to students in all Senior years and are an opportunity to drop in on a casual basis to seek assistance with any problems they may be having in Mathematics. Teachers give support to students who may be having trouble mastering a concept and can help with revision in the lead up to examinations.
