Examinations
Examinations are considered an important part of the development of students at Queenwood, training them in the rigours of learning.
In Junior School there is no formal written examination period as girls complete regular revision tests and various assessments throughout the year. Girls do take part in University of New South Wales Mathematics, English and Science competitions as well as external Basic Skills tests in Years 3 and 5.
In Senior School students are evaluated by a continuous assessment program throughout the year with assignments and tests considered just as important as examinations. By doing this, students are trained in their senior years to be ready for the Higher School Certificate or International Baccalaureate in which results are very much based on student progress during the year.
In Senior School Years 7-10 are examined in Term 2 and Term 4. Year 10 undertakes a Senior Studies Program in Term 4 to prepare them for the demands of senior work and to facilitate subject choices. Year 11 has significant tests in Term 2 and a major examination in Term 3. In Term 4 Year 11 students begin their HSC courses and formal HSC assessment begins while the IB program begins at the start of Year 11 and continues until the end of Year 12.
The HSC and IB Trial exams are held in Term 3 of Year 12. Students throughout the state sit for external exams for the School Certificate, Higher School Certificate and International Baccalaureate in Term 4.
The objective of examinations at Queenwood is to assist students in the practice of effective revision and building of knowledge. Students receive significant support from staff with particular emphasis in the early years of Senior School on how to prepare for examinations including study skills and time management techniques.
An examination timetable is given to students to enable planning. During examination periods, lessons cease and students are formally arranged in classrooms. Teachers and in certain cases, trained outside supervisors are rostered to supervise the exams, with students expected to abide by the examination rules.
