Cultural life at Queenwood
A celebration of the Arts is woven into the educational environment that Queenwood provides with students who choose to specialise having scope to take their talents to the highest levels, while for others there is a commitment to develop appreciation and enjoyment of music, art and drama. This starts in the earliest years with formal drama and art lessons in Junior School, while music is a regular part of school life. From Year 4 all students are required to take up a musical instrument for a minimum of two years, to give a taste of the instrumental experience. Those who choose to continue, have a variety of options to join Junior School ensembles, participate in AMEB examinations and eistedfodds.
The youngest members of the school (some in Kindergarten) can join the Twinklers (violin) and Sparklers (cello).
Other Junior groups are:
Stalley Strings
Concert Band
Intermediate Swing Band
Allegros (violin)
Flute ensemble
Clarinet ensemble
Sax ensemble
Medway Singers
In Senior School students can participate in:
Orchestra
Symphonic Wind Ensemble
Jazz Band
String Orchestra
Cello Quartet
Rock Band
Percussion Ensemble
Choir
Madrigal Group
Three Chamber Ensembles, which are part of the Honours program offered at the school to enrich gifted and talented students.
The House Music Festival, regular events such as 331 and 731 concerts and joint efforts with outside musical groups and visiting musicians, are all part of making music at Queenwood.
Drama provides students with creative expression and life skills in presentation. For students wishing to extend their scope in drama there are numerous opportunities at Queenwood with regular school productions in both Junior and Senior School.
The Astra Theatre in the Senior campus provides a professional performance space with theatre lighting, sound and rigging. Some girls choose to become involved in the 'behind the scenes' aspect of drama, honing skills in lighting and sound.
Beyond school productions are events such as the School Drama Festival and the popular Shakespeare Festival that provides thespians with an opportunity to perform and be judged for consideration in the regional Shakespeare Competition competing against other schools. Queenwood has enjoyed great success in recent years.
Another endeavour in the performing arts is involvement in The Young Dramatists Competition Page to Stage which sees students' scripts submitted for possible selection to be professionally directed and produced at The Ensemble Theatre. Queenwood students are regularly amongst those chosen to have their work produced.
Visual Arts is apparent from the vibrant children's artworks that line the corridors of Junior School to the works of established artists hung in the public spaces of Senior School. In such an inspiring environment, students consistently produce highly acclaimed major works for the Higher School Certificate with regular inclusion in Art Express. Incursions and excursions broaden students' appreciation of art.
