"Thank you Queenwood . . . and to all those teachers who allowed us to stretch, explore, question, rebel and grow."
Erica (Durham) Robinson, Head Prefect, 1960
Queenwood has been educating independent, dynamic young women for over 80 years. The records maintained in the School Archives document the story of Queenwood from its ethos and development to the achievements of its students and school community.
The information held in the archives falls broadly into two categories; the official records of the school and material donated to the school, usually by ex-students and staff or their families. Both categories of records exist in the following format based collections:
• paper based records, including correspondence, school reports and students’ school and artworks, and records relating to Associations and Groups
• School publications including
The Gazette, 1925 – 1987 and The Echo, 1988 to the present
Annual Reports
The Chronicle, award winning student newspaper, 1988 to the present
Books about Queenwood or written by former Queenwood students
• Photographs, comprising an estimated 10 000 images, 1925 - present
• Audio-visual, including film and sound recordings
• Architectural plans
• Uniform Collection
• Memorabilia and Museum items
• Newspaper clipping collection
• Extensive ephemera collection (programmes, invitations, posters)
The collection is used variously for education, marketing, displays and research, especially in the area of family history, girls’ education and the changing role of women in society. Items in the collection are also used for reunions in conjunction with QOGA.
The Archives is managed by a professional archivist and accessed via Cabban Street, Mosman, located at the bottom end of the Junior School campus. Opening hours are 10 am – 3 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays during term time. An appointment is necessary for casual researchers, and longer term researchers need to apply to the Principal in writing. Enquiries should be directed to Marguerite Gillezeau, archives@queenwood.nsw.edu.au or 9968 1899.
